About CHEO

Who we are

Dedicated to the best life for every child and youth, CHEO is a global leader in pediatric health care and research.

Redefining hospital

We are redefining what it means to be a hospital.

Exceptional and integrated care is what families, children and youth deserve. We are committed to partnering with them and the community to provide this care — where, when and how it’s needed.

CHEO is:

Whether a child you love – or you yourself as an adolescent – face illness, developmental issues or other health challenges, we’re here for you. Our goal is to deploy all of these services to help you and your family.

CHEO is a founding member of Kids Health Alliance, a network of partners working to create a high quality, standardized and coordinated approach to pediatric health care in Ontario that is centred around children, youth and their families.

Beyond Ottawa

CHEO has satellite services located throughout Eastern Ontario.

We partner with organizations in Nunavut, Northern Ontario and western Quebec, as well as throughout Eastern Ontario.

Some basics

Founded in 1974, CHEO’s principal funders are the people of Ontario through their provincial government’s ministries of Health, Children, Community and Social Services, and Education. Our services are also made possible by funding from the governments of Quebec, Nunavut and the City of Ottawa — as well as by generous donors in the community.

We are:

  • 3,200 doctors, nurses, other specialized health professionals and staff
  • 250 researchers
  • 700 volunteers
  • 2,300 trainees in medicine, nursing and other health professions

Every year, we have more than:

  • 6,700 admissions
  • 7,700 surgeries
  • 75,000 visits to the Emergency Department
  • 180,000 visits to our outpatient clinics

Our reach

Every year, we help more than:

  • 500,000 children and youth from Eastern Ontario, western Quebec, Nunavut and Northern Ontario.
